Hierro

CFF-18 certification
MAIN FEATURES / LATE NIGHT SHOCKS
Director: Gabe Ibanez. Starring: Kaiet Rodriguez, Elena Anaya, Bea Segura.
Spain, 2009. 91 mins. Spanish with English subtitles.
Named after the Spanish island to which María (Anaya) and her five-year-old son Diego are travelling by ferry when the boy disappears, HIERRO bears a resemblance to Lars von Trier’s ANTICHRIST for its reality-blurring study of a mother’s consuming grief and eventual madness. Six months after Diego’s vanishing, Maria returns to El Hierro and sees – or thinks she sees – her son playing on the beach. As she travels along the terrible path that will lead to her son, she will ultimately make that most unbearable discovery of all: that some mysteries are better left unrevealed. This stunning Spanish thriller boasts the producers of PAN’S LABYRINTH and THE ORPHANAGE in the credits.
