Synopsis

Original Title: Nånting måste gå sönder

In this raw and tender exploration of love and identity, Something Must Break follows the journey of Ellie (born Sebastian), a young transgender person grappling with self-discovery. Set against the backdrop of a gritty Stockholm, the film beautifully captures the intensity of romance with Andreas, a cis straight man who is both captivated and unnerved by their relationship. Director Ester M Bergsmark (winner of IFFR’s Tiger Award) creates a visually striking and emotionally charged narrative that blends vulnerability with defiance. This is a bold and uncompromising portrayal of gender fluidity, longing, and the search for authenticity in a world that refuses easy labels.

We are delighted to welcome director Ester M. Bergsmark for an in-person post‑screening Q&A on Friday 25th October
